I am often asked how I care for my hair because it is so long. In this blog post, I will highlight a few things that are essential for healthy hair! Proper nutrition is always crucial, but there are many additional factors.
A Good Brush:
A great brush is absolutely essential for healthy hair. Regular and thorough brushing helps keep your locks coated with natural oils which protects each strand. It adds shine and vibrancy to your hair as well. Conventional plastic brushes do not distribute the natural oils as you brush. Many contain endocrine disruptors such as Bisphenol A (BPA), Phthalates, and Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) which are known endocrine disruptors and are all harmful to our bodies. YUCK. Not to mention the thought of just how many plastic brushes as currently sitting in landfills, with no intention of breaking down anytime soon. (It takes most plastics 200 years to even BEGIN to break down!) We recommend an eco friendly wooden or bamboo brush. They are better for your hair, the environment, and better for you as a whole too!
Washing Too Often Is A No No
Washing your hair daily is not good for your hair, especially with a harsh shampoo. This strips away the natural oils and makes hair brittle over time, which leads to breakage. Using a natural sulfate free shampoo once or twice a week at most is best to maintain healthy locks. We recommend a dry shampoo like our Keep Me Fresh Dry Shampoo to absorb excess oil in between washes to keep you looking (and smelling) clean!
A great natural conditioner is also crucial for healthy shiny locks. It smooths and closes the hair shaft which helps to prevent breakage. Even if you have short hair, don't skip the conditioner!
Skip The Conventional Dyes
Conventional hair dyes are harmful and drying to your hair. There is no way around it. They contain ingredients like ammonia that have been linked to cancer and other health conditions. If you want to add a little color to your life, check out henna dye. It is natural and safe. Henna will not lighten your hair, but the old "lemon juice and sun" trick WILL!
Ditch The Hair Ties
Hair ties, especially when used daily, can cause breakage. It is best to use a clip to put your hair up. If you insist on using a hair tie, look for ties with no metal band. They are the most damaging.
Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure
Just as bleaching your hair damages it, prolonged exposure to the sun can as well. It can damage the cuticle making your hair susceptible to drying, breakage, and even color loss. We recommend wearing a hat when you are out in the sun (especially during peak hours) and avoiding chlorine pools whenever possible. If you must swim in a chlorinated pool, rinse your hair immediately afterwards to help mitigate the damage.
